Paul ButlerPaul Butler is a true servant leader in Cerro Gordo County 4-H. His contributions leave a legacy that is large in our county. From 4-H member to 4-H leader to beef superintendent, Paul has volunteered without reservation.

As a child, Paul attended his first fair at just weeks old. Born into a very active 4-H family, he grew up watching his father, Donald Butler, as a 4-H leader and mother, Donna, helping with 4-H. When he was old enough Paul became a member of the Thornton Farmhands 4-H club showing cattle and sheep. He won many awards and ribbons for his projects. Paul graduated from Thornton Community School District. He continued his education at Iowa State University AI school and took over his family’s cattle business, 4B Cattle.

As a young adult, Paul began serving as leader of the Lakes Ambitious Feeder’s 4-H club, and then took the role as county beef superintendent. He has served as a volunteer for 35 years in Cerro Gordo County. In his role as a beef project leader, he helps 4-H members with selection, care, and showmanship of calves each year. Paul has even helped members start their own herds of Shorthorn cattle.  If anyone has an interest in cattle Paul is there to be a role model and support them through his hands-on approach.

He is known for his quiet nature, but his work always speaks volumes of his character to get the job done and done well! He also hosts the Cerro Gordo county beef weigh-in each year at his home. He really enjoys developing relationships with the 4-H members that are enrolled in beef. He is admired by all the beef exhibitors in the county.

Paul resides in rural Thornton with his wife, Connie. They raise shorthorn cattle. His grandchildren continue to show cattle in 4-H with his guidance at their side. Paul is an active member of the Cerro Gordo County Cattlemen Association.

Paul lives the 4-H pledge every day through his leadership role in Cerro Gordo County. His focus on keeping the beef project area strong through hands-on educational experiences leaves his club, community, country, and world a better place to be in. Cedar County is proud to nominate Paul Butler as Cerro Gordo County’s Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame recipient for 2021 for his support of youth and 4-H in our community!
