4-H and the Lyon County Fair have been a part of this year’s Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame honorees for over 50 years! Orvis & Diane Peters

Diane (Hofstra) Peters joined the Rock Rapids Livestock – North 4-H Club in 1961.  While in 4-H, she showed static exhibits and showed cattle at the Lyon County Fair – the highlight of her 4-H career was having the Grand Champion Market Steer in 1968 out of a class of 100 lead steers.

Orvis Peters joined the Little Rock Livestock Feeders in 1960 and while he was in 4-H he showed horses and beef.  In those days the horse show was in front of the grandstand and in 1967, Orvis had the Grand Champion Trail horse.

It was at a beef project workshop where the two 4-Her’s met and in July 1969 the young couple was married.

Over the years, Orvis and Diane have been instrumental and have contributed thought and insight to the growth and success of the Lyon County 4-H program  serving as horse project superintendents and Lyon County Fair Board members for several years.  The hours they have volunteered for multiple projects on the fairgrounds and for the 4-H program are far too numerous to count!

Diane is a past 4-H leader of the Elgin Stars 4-H Club and is currently serving as a Lyon County Extension Council member and a member of the Lyon County 4-H Foundation Board.  She is also an approved 4-H Static Project judge, having judged projects in multiple surrounding counties.

Orvis and Diane believe in what 4-H represents and have successfully conveyed that to their four grown children and seven grandchildren, who are also very active in the Lyon County 4-H program.
