Minnesota native, Marty Olsen, first experienced 4-H as a youth. She faithfully served 13 years in Buena Vista County as a Newell Boosters 4-H Club parent-leader.  Marty most recently served as a sheep superintendent until 2011.

Marty has taken a lot of pride in building 4-H homecoming floats.  She has always been one to highlight the importance of 4-H by decorating for gatherings during National 4-H Week.

In 1995 Marty helped chaperone 4-H’ers, including her son, Mark, on the Wyoming Cattle Spring Round-up.   She was a Buena Vista 4-H executive committee member for ten years and was also the county’s first 4-H “Clover Kids” certified volunteer.  Perhaps the biggest highlight of Marty’s involvement in 4-H was her part in the 2000 grant acquisition and establishment of a 4-H orchard at the ISU Allee Research Farm in Newell.

Other ISU Extension efforts include serving on the Buena Vista County Home Economics Committee and Blue Ribbon Committee.

Their three sons are 4-H Alumni:  Mark and wife Valerie, farm at Schaller with three children (4 to 1 years of age), Kurt, Positec design engineer, and wife Beth at Newell with two sons (3½ and 1½ years of age), and Peter of Newell is a project manager at Meridian Manufacturing in Storm Lake.  A retired ISU Farm Management Specialist, her husband, Tom, returned to the family farm.
