Joan “Jo” Preston grew up as a 4-Her in Montgomery County. As a youth, she participated in the 4-H communications competition at the Iowa State Fair and always cherished her memories of demonstrating “how to sew” to the audience. Jo shared her enthusiasm for 4-H by helping 4-Hers in Adams County throughout her entire adult life.

Jo married Richard Preston of Prescott in Adams County in 1969. She and her husband Richard raised two children (Troy and Nicole) in the Adams County 4-H program.

Joan PrestonJo spent 10 years as a leader of the Prescott 4-H Workers 4-H Club in the 1980’s and 90’s and then came out of “4-H leader” retirement to serve as a Prescott 4-H club leader for another 4 years from 2006 to 2010.

Jo also served 4 years on the Adams County Youth and 4-H committee and helped out with many other Adams County 4-H events, daycamps, and activities through the years.

When her daughter Nicci decided to take up 4-H judging in the 90’s, Jo decided to go through the training with her. Both Jo and her daughter have had great opportunities and experiences judging a variety of county fairs since then. One of her favorite events to judge is the cooking competition in Cass County where the 4-Hers whip up a dish right there.
