4-H is a big part of Bob’s life and a part of the reason he finished his working career in Extension. He belonged in 4-H in both Kossuth and Humboldt counties as a youth. He showed cattle and played 4-H basketball. He was elected vice president at the Humboldt County Convention and also attended the Chicago Convention. He remembers going to Chicago by train.
Bob is an Iowa State University animal science major. One of the highlights in college and testimonial of his knowledge was winning first place at the Little International Livestock Showmanship contest. He stole the show and was presented with three trophies, Grand Champion Showman, Champion Duroc Showman, and Champion Swine Showman. While in Extension, Bob received his masters degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in business.
He and his wife Patty have two sons, Alan and Curt. Both boys were in 4-H and also served on county council. Bob and Patty became 4-H leaders, rejuvenating a club to over fifty members. He also served on the Extension Council and Youth Program Committee prior to being employed by ISUE. As an Extension staff member he was instrumental in starting the livestock judging up again, the Farm Safety, Environmental Awareness programs and Speak Up! programs for school children.
Bob has been recognized nationally for his knowledge of swine genetics and also judged many county and regional 4-H swine shows. He has served on many organizations, church committees and the Kossuth County Pork Producers and many state swine committees over the years.
Bob can still be found helping youth with their swine project or helping them understand the art of fishing. or playing with his grandchildren. He continues to assist the Extension Office with the Fish IOWA and Speak Up! Programming. Youth will always be an important part of Bob’s life.
