2004 Pocahontas County - Melvin and Leveta BarnhardtMelvin and Leveta Barnhardt are past 4-H leaders in Pocahontas County, serving a total of 15 years, for the Grant Glistener’s and the Grant Guides Clubs.  They have fond memories of helping with many club projects, mowing a township cemetery as a club service project, and serving food to RAGBRAI riders.

The Barnhardt’s have served as the superintendents for the flower and garden division for over 20 years and have helped both the 4-H and open classes to grow to be outstanding competitions.  In addition, they enjoy exhibiting flowers and garden projects at the Pocahontas and Clay County fairs.  In fact, last year they were honored for exhibiting at the Clay County Fair for 50 years!

In 1967 they were honored as the Iowa Blue Ribbon Family by the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce during the Iowa State Fair.  At that time they had exhibited at 8 different fairs and earned 270 blue ribbons with projects such as crabapple and mint jelly, gladioli and other flowers, Brown Swiss cows, and garden vegetables.  Their three children also participated in 4-H.

A past 4-H member from Leveta’s 4-H club credits learning many of her life skills to the club projects she learned in the Grant Glistener’s.
