2002 West Pottawattamie County - Leonard Timm

Leonard Timm was born on October 15, 1915 in Hardin Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, on the farm his grandfather, then his father farmed.  He in turn lived and farmed there until 1991, when he moved to Treynor, Iowa.  As a farmer he fed cattle, raised hogs and had a purebred Angus cow herd.

Leonard has been involved in 4-H since 1928 and was a member of the Hardin Knights 4-H Club, a club that is still a very strong club.  He showed calves at the first Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock show in 1928.  In 1931 and 1933 he won Grand Champion Hog at Ak-Sar-Ben.  Each year he showed at both County Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben until he was 18 years of age.

As an adult Leonard has been involved volunteering at the fair for many years, beginning at Playland Park, then on to Westfair.  He has served as Co-chairman of the Sale Committee at Westfair for the past 29 years.  He has also taken care of the show-ring during that time.  Each year he spends many hours at the fair ground helping prepare livestock buildings and show ring for fair.
Leonard worked at Ak-Sar-Ben Hog Show for 19 years and in 1992 he was recognized and presented with a belt buckle for this.  While a 4-H member he went to State Fair with the demonstration team several times and was also on the judging team.  He won a trip to 4-H Congress in the Chicago National Livestock Show through Ak-Sar-Ben.

As an adult he received the Outstanding Beef Producer Award from Pottawattamie County Cattle Feeders in 1983, received the Westfair Volunteer of the Year Award, Friend of 4-H award, Family of the Year 4-H Award, Westfair Hall of Fame Award in 1991.  In 1999 he was honored by the sale committee that named a new award in his honor, “The Timmy Award” and is presented each year to someone who has given years of service to Westfair 4-H.

Leonard is also a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor, IA., where he has served on the church council, the cemetery board, served on Bethany Lutheran Home Board of Directors and was on many committees.  He has been a board member of the Treynor State Bank for the past 30 years.  Leonard served in the navy during WW II and is a member of the American Legion Post #725 in Treynor, is a past member of the Pottawattamie County Cattle Feeders, and was a 50 year shipper to the Omaha Livestock Exchange.

His son and daughter followed in his footsteps, belonging to 4-H and showing at County Fair, State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben.
