2002 Washington County - H. Esther Birney

Esther Birney has been a long time supporter and volunteer for the 4-H program both in Washington County and on the state level.  She was the leader of the Iowa Maidens 4-H Club for 12 years.  Following her retirement as club leader, Esther continued her involvement with 4-H as superintendent of the Washington County fair visual arts department for 22 years.  In addition, she was co-superintendent with her husband James in the SMA building for 22 years.

For 17 years, Esther and James did double duty as they transported county fair exhibits to the state fair, then stayed and helped in the 4-H Exhibit building at the state fair.  Esther and James were contributors to the Iowa 4-H Foundation.  In 2001, the Birney family was recognized for helping make possible a Washington County 4-H Foundation using money given in memory of James.

Esther also volunteered her time by serving on the Iowa State Extension Advisory Committee, Washington County Extension Family Living Committee, and the Washington County Extension Council.  Washington County recognizes Esther’s outstanding service and dedication to 4-H and Extension.
