Miss Ellen Rice was born and raised east of Hamburg, IA, attended Nebraska U. and taught school in Wyoming for several years before returning to the southwest Iowa area.  Her career included work at the County Extension Office and the Hamburg Hospital.

Rice served as a member of the Fremont County Girls 4-H Club Committee from 1940-1944.  She was a 4-H club leader for the Locust Grove Lively Lassies in 1940 and 1941.  With other girls’ 4-H club committee members, she helped the club reorganize in 1943.  At the 1941 State 4-H Girls Convention, Rice, Jeanne Whipple and Irene Bateman were in charge of Marie Teachout’s campaign for state 4-H girls’ president.  Rice played the piano for numerous 4-H events.  She also helped judge local achievement shows and assisted in various departments of the Fremont County girls’ achievement show.

A number of organizations were remembered by Miss Rice in her will, including Fremont County 4-H.  In November 1993, $24,406.59 was donated to the 4-H program from the Ellen Rice estate.  To support 4-H in Fremont County, a county Endowment fund was established with the funds invested with the Iowa 4-H Foundation.  Through generous individuals and families, donations and memorials continue to be added to the fund since its establishment in 1993.
